New Delhi: Amid rising cases of coronavirus, the Chandigarh Education Department has announced an extension of winter vacation slots for government, government-aided schools and private schools. The department has reported that the winter vacation period in schools has been fixed from December 20 to January 7 as a precautionary measure.

However, this will not lead to holidays for teachers on examination and election duty. These holidays have been declared only for school schools. The Education Department had declared a holiday in the academic calendar from December 27 to January 5, but it has been decided to keep schools closed for a longer period in view of the possible third wave of coronavirus in the city.

Schools will formally reopen from January 10, as January 8 will be the second Saturday and January 9 will be Sunday. According to the department, the exams will continue as per the prescribed datasheet. Employees on election duty will also continue their work. Privaterecognized schools have also been advised to follow these instructions. The administration has decided to close schools in the city early after three students from different schools were found to be infected with corona. Two of the three corona infected students are from private schools and one from government schools.
