Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is presently going through corona havoc and now the Nipah virus has also hit here. In fact, under recent information, a 12-year-old boy has died of the Nipah virus in the state. Many people are shocked by the death and now, under the information received, the Centre has also sent one of its teams to Kerala for technical assistance in hurry. The team is said to reach Kerala today.

In fact, a suspected case of Nipah virus was reported in Kozhikode district on September 3, in which a 12-year-old boy was diagnosed with encephalitis and myocarditis. The boy was then admitted to the hospital, though he died this morning. In this case, the health department earlier suspected that 'he was infected with Nipah but now the death of the child after confirmation of the infection has scared him. It is also being reported that the Central Government has sent a team of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to the State for providing technical assistance. A recent health department source said, "The state government held a high-level meeting of health officials late on Saturday night after receiving information about Nipah's suspected infection.''

On the other hand, state health minister Veena George says, "All three samples of the boy were found positive for Nipah virus by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.'' Further, the minister said, "The boy was admitted to a private hospital a few days ago with a complaint of high fever and was initially suspected to be suffering from meningitis, but later the sample was taken to NIV for further tests. All the relatives of the boy and all those involved in his treatment have been placed in the warranty. Authorities have kept a total of 30 people associated with the boy under surveillance and sent 17 samples for testing.''

Also, health officials said, 'They suspect that the virus is spread by bats, as it did before.' What is Nipah Virus - According to experts, the Nipah virus is mainly transmitted by bats. Bats leave their saliva on the fruit they eat. In this case, animals or humans who eat fruits become infected with the Nipah virus.
