Brazil has reported the first death from the Omicron strain of COVID-19 in the city of Aparecida de Goiania in the state of Goias. The casualty was a 68-year-old man with high blood pressure and "chronic obstructive lung disease," according to the municipality, who was admitted to a local hospital, according to the news agency.

The patient was a contact of a proven Omicron case, according to the media outlet, and had received three vaccine doses. The death occurred 10 days after the city's declaration of community transmission of the variation, according the local health secretariat.
