While registering a new product on the online marketplace (GeM) of the Government of India, sellers must state the 'country of origin' of the product. This means that sellers will have to give information about where the goods have been manufactured or where they have been imported. Apart from this, the vendors who have registered their products before this feature is implemented on GeM, are being asked to update frequently where the said similar product has been manufactured or produced. They have also been warned that if they do not do so, their products will be removed from GeM.

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM), working under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has taken this remarkable step to promote 'Make in India' and 'Self-reliant India'. GeM has also made a provision to indicate how much local content is in the product. After the new feature, information on the 'Country of Origin' as well as the percentage of local content will be clearly mentioned in front of every item registered on the e-market place. Please tell that now the filter of 'Make in India' has started working on the portal. Buyers will now have the option to purchase at least 50 percent products with local ingredients.

For your information, let us tell you that in the release issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, it has been said that GeM has been working towards promoting the 'Make in India' initiative since its inception. From this market place, small local vendors have got a platform to participate in public procurement. This release states that during this period of covid-19, when government organizations are urgently in need of products, GeM is proving to be a very effective, transparent and economical platform for public procurement of goods.
