New Delhi: In a case related to the riots in north-east Delhi, the court asked the Delhi Police that before the copy of the supplementary charge sheet filed against the former student leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Umar Khalid was received by the accused or his lawyer, how was it allegedly leaked in the media? Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dinesh Kumar directed the Delhi Police to inform by 14 January how it was allegedly leaked to the media before the court took cognizance of the charge sheet.

Umar Khalid has stated in his petition that the allegations levelled in the supplementary charge sheet and his revelations in the media were allegedly compromising his right to a wrongful, malicious and impartial hearing. He had earlier alleged that the media was running a malicious campaign against him and urged the court to direct the police how he or his lawyer got it before the media got the charge sheet.

During the hearing, Umar Khalid said, "As I mentioned earlier, it was made public before the charge sheet was provided to me and the media was making news based on it. I came to know in the news that the charge sheet referred to a statement given by me and based on that so-called statement, the media reported that I had accepted my role."
