Covaxin is Now Approved in the United States and UK

The UK government announced on Monday that from November 22, India's homegrown vaccine Covaxin will be added to its list of approved jabs for international travellers, removing the need for those inoculated with the Bharat Biotech-manufactured shot to self-isolate after arriving in England. The decision was made in response to the World Health Organization's (WHO) Emergency Use Listing for Covaxin, India's second-most-used formulation. Covaxin will be approved by the United States, which also lifted its Covid-19 travel restrictions after 21 months; all FDA and WHO-approved vaccines are to be recognised by US authorities.

Covaxin has received approval in a number of countries so far. However, despite the approval of the vaccine, direct travel to some countries is still not possible because the Indian government has extended the suspension of scheduled international passenger flights until November 30, 2021, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. Only countries with air-bubble agreements with India have direct flights to India.

In addition to Covaxin, the UK government will add Sinovac and Sinopharm, both of which are on the WHO Emergency Use List, to its approved Covid vaccine list for inbound travellers. Covishield, the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine manufactured in India, was added to the UK's approved list last month.
