From the timely documentary Totally Under Control to lighter fare like the Anne Hathaway-Chiwetel Ejiofor heist rom-com Locked Down, a number of films have dealt with the COVID-19 epidemic in one way or another. It's uncertain how hungry viewers are for stories about a terrible thing that not only occurred to everyone but is still happening, yet creativity may occasionally flourish when things are at their worst.

The new film Together will need patience from viewers as it follows an unidentified couple (James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan) as they navigate the ups and downs of quarantining together in London with their son, Artie (Samuel Logan). Rather than being relieved to have someone to depend on during such a hard moment, it's apparent from the start that the two despise each other.

The film, directed by Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin and written by Dennis Kelly, premieres on March 24, 2020, and following the pair for the next year. Each scene tells a story about one aspect of their lives, whether it’s their personal history or things they’re experiencing currently, and the fast-paced nature of the dialogue coupled with the very British local references often makes it hard to keep up.

Instead of the audience being a fly on the wall for their awkward conversations/arguments, the film engages the audience by having the two characters address the camera directly for the majority of their discussion. They aren't making a documentary like The Office, and they aren't talking to Artie, who spends most of his time in different rooms, silently absorbing the nastiness his parents are dealing out. It's one of those things that spectators must accept in order to engage with the picture at all.

As if anybody watching needed reminding, the video addresses many of the anxieties and concerns we all had in the early days of the epidemic, including toilet paper stockpiling, wiping down food, and worrying about family members in nursing homes. The number of individuals that died of COVID in the United Kingdom at the time is also updated at the start of each scenario, making things even more depressing.
