Apart from protecting you from a potentially fatal disease, Covid-19 vaccination may also improve your psychological well-being, according to a new study that indicated participants who received at least one vaccine dose had statistically significant reductions in numerous psychological distress variables.

Vaccination was linked to lower levels of discomfort and perceived risks of illness, hospitalisation, and death in the study, which was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. "Beyond reducing the risk of severe disease and mortality linked with Covid-19, our study reveals major psychological benefits of immunisation," said lead investigator Jonathan Koltai, PhD, Department of Sociology, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH, US.

Data from a nationally representative research of 8,090 persons who were interviewed on a regular basis between March 2020 and June 2021 found that following vaccination, Covid-related risk perceptions and psychological discomfort decreased.

Adults who got at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine between December 2020 and June 2021 reported a 7percent  reduction in mental anguish, as measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire 4 (PHQ-4) distress ratings, when compared to average levels in the survey period before to vaccination.
