Corona fatalities in Africa surged amid new variants: WHO

The new variants of coronavirus is wreaking havoc in around the world. Brazil, France, Russia and the United Kingdom were also among the nations reporting the highest number of new cases worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) , the number corona related deaths in Africa has spiked as the continent grapples with local transmission of highly contagious strains of the virus.

WHO Regional Director for Africa,Matshidiso Moeti said that the death toll from the pandemic increased by 40 percent in January, fuelled by a second wave of infections and new variants that have overwhelmed the continent's public health systems. In a statement, "The increasing deaths from corona, we are seeing are tragic, but are also disturbing warning signs that health workers and health systems in Africa are dangerously overstretched."

Meanwhile, according to data from the World Health Organization, the number of new Covid-19 cases reported across the globe has declined for a fourth week in a row. The number of cornona deaths reported worldwide decreased for the second week running, with 88,000 new deaths reported last week, a 10% drop compared to the previous week.3.1 million new cases of Covid-19 were reported around the world last week.
