Clinical trial of Novavax vaccine to begin in July on children: Serum Institute of India

The Serum Institute of India is planning to start clinical trials of Novavax vaccine on children from July. This will be the fourth vaccine in the country to go for clinical trials on children. On Tuesday, the Central government had said that the effectiveness figures of novawax vaccine against corona infection are confidence-generating and its clinical trial is in the advanced stage of completion in India.

Novawax which has tied up with serum institute of India for vaccine manufacturing, had said on Monday that its vaccine is more effective against corona and provides protection against all variants of the virus. The company said the vaccine is about 90.4 percent effective overall and current data shows that it is safe. NITI Aayog member (Health) V K Paul had said on Tuesday that publicly available data also indicates that the Novawax vaccine is safe and very effective.

He said, "What we are seeing from the available data is that the vaccine is very safe. But the fact that makes this vaccine effective for today is that it will be produced by the Serum Institute in India. Earlier, Hyderabad-based company Bharat Biotech has started clinical trials of vaccine on children in the age group of 12-18 years. The trial will be conducted on a total of 525 children at AIIMS Patna and Delhi. The trial is scheduled to be held in three parts and will consist of three groups of 175-175 volunteers of the Age Group for 12-18, 6-12 and 2-6 years".
