COVID vaccination drive for all above 18 to begin today

The raging second wave of the coronavirus was made India’s condition dreadful and heartbreaking. Several states and UTs to curb the prevailing situation have started inoculating citizens. Today, on May 1st, above 18 years of age can also get vaccination jab. Phase 3 of the world’s largest COVID-19 vaccination drive has been extended to ensure that maximum numbers of Indians take the coronavirus vaccine.

India has reported over 3,00,000 new cases daily for nine days in a row now. The country hit another global record of 3,86,452 on Friday after the United States of America. More than 2.45 crore beneficiaries have registered themselves on the Co-WIN portal for phase 3 of the vaccination. While more than 1.37 crore registered themselves on the first day of registration on April 28. However, several states and UTs including Maharashtra and Delhi have reported a massive shortage of vaccines. On the other hand, the Government of India stated more than 1 crore coronavirus vaccine doses availability with the states and UTs to be administered. They have so far provided 16.33 crore vaccine doses to states and UTs free of cost, as per the data from on Friday morning. In January this year Phase-I was launched prioritizing the protection of the Health Care Workers and Front Line Workers Vaccination. Subsequently, phase-II was initiated from March 1 and April 1 focused on protecting above 45 years of age. 

In India, the Emergency Use Authorisation has granted to two indigenously manufactured vaccines: COVISHEILD of Serum Institute of India and COVAXIN of Bharat Biotech.  Also, a third vaccine, Sputnik will soon be manufactured in India.
