According to top government sources, the Centre is considering reducing the interval between Covishied Covid vaccination doses. 'A reduction in the dosage gap between two Covishield doses is being examined, and it will be addressed further in NTAGI,' an official added. Dr. NK Arora, head of the Covid-19 working committee, stated earlier this month that the government may reduce the interval between the two Covishield dosages, but only for those aged 45 and higher. For all adults, the time between Covishield dosages is currently 12 to 16 weeks. The recommended gap between the two doses of Covishield was 4-6 weeks at the start of the immunization campaign in India, then was increased to 4 to 8 weeks, and finally to 12 to 16 weeks.

The move to prolong the interval to 12 to 16 weeks led to a debate since it was seen as an attempt to solve the country's current vaccine shortage. Experts, on the other hand, said that the decision was based on recent international scientific research that demonstrated that a larger interval between doses resulted in the production of more antibodies. In these studies, the percentage of antibodies produced by the vaccine's first dose was shown to be rather high. As a result, the next dose should be postponed to allow the first injection to complete its work.

However, in June, after India lengthened the interval between the two doses, studies claimed that the effectiveness of the first Covishield shot had been overestimated previously. This was followed by a reduction in the time between the two Covishield dosages in various countries. Indian experts have stated that the vaccination situation is fluid and would change as new research emerges, but that public health will always take precedence in any choice made.
