Crimes against women: Nearly 31,000 complaints received in 2021

New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) received about 31,000 complaints of crimes against women in 2021, the largest number since 2014, with over half of them coming from Uttar Pradesh.

In comparison to 2020, when 23,722 complaints were received, there was a 30% increase in complaints of crimes against women in 2021.  According to official NCW data, a total of 11,013 complaints were connected to the right to live with dignity, which takes into consideration emotional abuse of women, followed by 6,633 complaints relating to domestic violence and 4,589 complaints related to dowry harassment.

Uttar Pradesh, the most populated state, has the most reports of crimes against women with 15,828, followed by Delhi with 3,336, Maharashtra with 1,504, Haryana with 1,460, and Bihar with 1,456. Uttar Pradesh received the biggest number of complaints pertaining to the right to live in dignity and domestic abuse, according to the data.

Since 2014, the number of complaints received by the NCW has been at an all-time high. A total of 33,906 complaints were received in 2014.
