New Delhi: The incidents of mob lynching started increasing since the Modi government took over the country. PM Modi came under attack due to the involvement of people of the ruling party in most of the incidents. Under this, 49 celebrities wrote a letter to PM Modi and protested. They wrote an open letter to PM Modi which is being called treason. A case was later filed against these celebrities. The action has been criticized by more than 180 members, including historian Romila Thapar, cinematographer Anand Pradhan, actor Naseeruddin Shah.

An FIR was lodged against 49 celebrities including director Aparna Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and writer Ramachandra Guha in Muzaffarpur, Bihar last week. How the case of treason was made. Recently the Supreme Court judge Justice Deepak Gupta said that treason charges cannot be made for criticizing the government.

The letter said, 'A case has been registered against 49 of our colleagues in the cultural community. Only because they raised their voice as a responsible citizen of the society. Expressing concern over the mob lynching happening in the country, they wrote an open letter to the Prime Minister. Will it be called a case of treason? Isn't it torture to silence people's voices by misusing the courts? ' Those who signed the letter include authors Ashok Vajpayee and Jerry Pinto, Ira Bhaskar, poet Jeet Thayil, writer Shamsul Islam, musician TM Krishna and filmmaker-activist Saba Divan. The ruling party calls it a conspiracy against the government.
