New Delhi: The Congress Working Committee (CWC), and the congress's top decision-making body, will meet on October 16 to brainstorm on the election of the party's new national president, the "current political situation," the upcoming assembly elections. "The Congress Working Committee will meet on Saturday, October 16 at 10 am," the party said in a statement this afternoon.

The decision comes in the wake of a letter from senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was among the G-23 members, who wrote to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi last year demanding organisational reforms. Recently, he wrote a new letter asking him to convene an urgent meeting of the CWC. The Congress party leadership has been facing a crisis since Rahul Gandhi resigned as party president in July 2019. It has been more than two years since Rahul Gandhi's shocking resignation that the party is yet to get a full-time president.

With elections in major states, a constant wave of internal rifts has also affected the state units of Congress, putting the party in a deep political crisis a few months before the assembly elections. Senior party leader Kapil Sibal, who is also among the G-23 leaders, had recently sparked a leadership debate in the party. He had said, "There is no President in our party, so we don't know who is making decisions. We know and yet we don't know.''
