CWG 2022: Sagar Ahlawat, an up-and-coming Indian boxer, wrapped up a strong Commonwealth Games performance by winning the silver medal in this category for superheavyweight (+92kg).

Sagar, who was competing in his first international competition, was defeated by home favourite Delicious Orie in the gold medal match late on Sunday by a score of 5-0.

The 20-year-old, who had stunned everyone with his impressive performance in the previous fights, was forced to play defence in the first round as Orie took the initiative. But all five judges ruled in favour of the Indian because he successfully counterpunched and defended properly.

The Haryana fighter, who comes from a farming family, appeared to be becoming exhausted, though, as he started constantly gripping, which also got him a warning from the referee, a minute into the second round.
Sagar was exhausted by the third round but still managed to score a couple jabs. He also began to bleed after being sliced above his left eye by one of Orie's strikes. The Englishman made the most of that string of successful uppercuts to win the match.

The youngster, who started playing the sport five years ago after reading a newspaper story about the 2015 "Fight of the Century" between boxing legends Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, had a fantastic campaign despite losing in the final.

A total of seven medals, including three gold, one silver, and three bronze, will be brought back by the Indian boxing team.

The three gold medalists from India are Nikhat Zareen (50 kg), Amit Panghal (51 kg), and Nitu Ghanghas (48 kg).
