Cyclone, extremely heavy rainfall likely over Bay of Bengal in next 12 hours: India Meteorological Department

Visakhapatnam: Strong wind speed reaching 75 to 85 kmph gusting to 95 kmph is prevailing over West Central Bay of Bengal off Andhra Pradesh coast. India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials informed that a deep depression is going to intensify into a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal in the next 12 hours. It is likely to cross the coast around Kalingapatnam on Sunday evening. Tidal waves of height 0.5 m above astronomical tide are likely over Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts. Under its influence, isolated extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts.

In case of emergency, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and NDRF will be involved in the rescue operations. Meanwhile, the district administration and the civic body have warned fishermen not to venture into the sea till September 27 as the impact of the cyclone is likely to continue for the next two days. In Vizianagaram, the district administration is prepared to face any emergency-like situation in view of the threat of cyclone, which is likely to result in thunderstorm accompanied with thunderstorms till September 28.

District Collector A Surya Kumari asked all the officials of the Water Resources and Revenue Department and people living in coastal villages to be alert. District Collector Shrikesh B Lathkar held a review meeting with the precautionary officers on Saturday. Control rooms were also set up in three revenue divisional offices of the district and all 38 mandal tehsildar offices across the district. Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed at Kalingapatnam and Kavita Coast in the district.
