Cyclone Gulab is set to hit the coastal states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh today. This was recently informed by the India Meteorological Department. He said, "The coastal states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are fully prepared for Cyclone 'Gulab.' The MET department has also informed that "the deep pressure over the Bay of Bengal turned into a cyclonic storm 'Gulab' on Saturday, issuing an 'orange' alert for the coasts of northern Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha. With this, a warning has been issued in parts of southern Odisha where cyclone Gulab is likely to wreak havoc.''

The cyclonic storm is said to be moving westwards and is likely to pass between Kalingaport in northern Andhra Pradesh and the Gopalpur coast of southern Odisha on Sunday evening. Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has said, "I held a meeting on 'Cyclone Gulab' at Odisha Bhawan and discussed necessary precautions. The cyclone is expected to hit about 10 districts of the state tonight.'' As per the information received, cyclone Gulab is 270 kilometres southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha and is expected to move westwards. It is also being said that the cyclone may have a landslide late tonight and the wind speed may be 75-85 kmph at that time.

What is Gulab Storm- The word 'Gulab' refers to a perennial flowering plant. According to the official notification of IMD, tropical cyclone Gulab has been named 'Gu-Lab.' In fact, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) keeps a list of names of each tropical cyclone basin that changes on a regular basis.
