Cyclone 'Jawad' expects to weaken into deep depression near Puri

Odisha: The cyclonic storm "Jawad," which is now centred over the western Bay of Bengal, is expected to weaken into a deep depression before making landfall near Puri, Odisha, on Sunday, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The cyclonic storm was centred over the west-central Bay of Bengal, around 5:30 am on Saturday, some 230 kilometres southeast of Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and 410 kilometres south-southwest of Puri, Odisha, according to the IMD. "It is expected to weaken steadily over the next 12 hours and then move north-northeastwards down the Odisha coast, arriving near Puri about noon on December 5 as a deep depression. It is then expected to weaken further and move north-northeastwards along the Odisha coast toward the coast of West Bengal," it warned.

On December 2, it turned into a depression, and on Friday morning, it turned into a profound depression. On Friday afternoon, it became a cyclone, according to the IMD. By Friday evening, very heavy rain is expected to begin in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south coastal Odisha. Rainfall intensity is expected to increase on Saturday, according to the Meteorological Office.
