Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian film industry, gave the country its first film when no one wanted to work in movies, nor was anyone aware of cameras, scripts, dialogues and other production works. It was a time when no actress was found for her first movie 'Raja Harishchandra' and a cook played the heroine. India got to see this first film in 1913 which did not have a voice. The film was 'Silent'. Today is dadasaheb phalke's 151st birth anniversary to make the same movie. On this occasion, they tell you that there are some things you must know about Dadasaheb.
Photography started his career:-
Dadasaheb Phalke's real name was Dhundiraj Govind Phalke. He was born on April 30, 1870 in Nashik district of Maharashtra. He had an interest in art since childhood. At the age of 15, he was born in Mumbai. J. Enrolled in the College of Art. He then enrolled in the Art Bhawan of Maharaj Shivaji Rao University and studied painting as well as photography. He started his first job as a photographer in Godhra. Shortly thereafter, his wife and child suddenly died of plague, which he could not tolerate and quit his job. Later, Dadasaheb also worked on the post of cartographer in the Archaeological Survey of India. After leaving it, he started printing at the age of 40. He also worked for painter Raja Ravi Verma. Then, he opened his printing press. At the same time, he also travelled abroad for the first time. He arrived in Germany to understand the latest technology and machinery. He then quit due to an ongoing dispute with his partner over printing.
The idea of filmmaking came from watching a silent movie:-
Dadasaheb Phalke's idea of making a film came after watching the silent film The Life of Christ. Seeing this, he felt that people would like it if he showed a story on screen about the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Dadasaheb made his first short film 'Growth of a Pea Plant' in 1910. For this, they sowed peas and then captured each frame of the process of growing it on their camera. After shooting for 45 days, he made this 2 minute short film.
In search of lead actor he wrote "ugly faces need not to apply":
The movie required good looking actors for which many aids were given. Then people from all sides came to him. Upset, he again gave an ed that read "Ugly faces need not apply"
Wife sells jewellery and pays to make a film:-
Dadasaheb Phalke then went to England to learn filmmaking. After coming, he started making 'Raja Harishchandra'. The film cost around Rs 15,000 to make. All this money was sold by his second wife Saraswati Bai. If his wife had not accompanied him, he might not have made the first film. After coming from England, when he shared the idea of making a film with friends, no one supported him. Some friends even asked him to send him to mental asylum. But Saraswati Bai supported him.
