World number one men's player in tennis Novak Djokovic suffered a defeat at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Thursday. He has been beaten 6-4, 7-6 by unranked Jiri Wesley in the quarter-finals of this ATP 500 event. Djokovic's defeat means that Daniil Medvedev will now become the world's number one male player by removing Djokovic in the upcoming rankings. The new rankings may be released on February 28.

Medvedev could be the third Player from Russia to reach the first ranking. Prior to which Yevgeny Cafilnikov (1999) and Marat Safin (2000-01) have done so. The last player who finished at the number one position with the Big Four (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic and Andy Murray) was Andy Roddick.

Roddick has moved to the first position on November 3, 2003, and has also been removed from the top ranking on February 2, 2004. Roger Federer then became number one. After which in the last 18 years, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray have taken the number one position.

Djokovic became number one for the first time on July 4, 2011, and will remain number one until the new rank comes in by February 28. Djokovic last secured the first rank on March 8, 2021, and has been ranked number one for the past 11 months.
