The most awaited movie of the year, Darlings hits the screen today. It features Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, and Vijay Varma in Lead roles. It is Alia Bhatt's director debut film.

Story of Darlings

Badrunissa (Alia Bhatt) falls in love and marries Hamza (Vijay Varma) who turns out to be an alcoholic who beats his wife. Three years pass, and Hamza is revealed to be an alcoholic and a wife beater. He would assault Badru over trivial matters at night. In the morning, he would apologize or express regret over the violence. Badru would then forgive him. Her mother Shamshunnisa (Shefali Shah) stays in the same chawl in Byculla and encourages her daughter daily to get rid of her abusive husband. But she has still not lost hope. She wants to have a baby with her husband, fulfill the dreams she had seen with this man and keep looking for ways to reform him. But one Day after the similar abuse Badru decided to give it back and take revenge.

Characters

Alia Bhatt plays the role of Badru, a Muslim woman very well. Speaking about her mother Shefali Shah has also managed to portray her role efficiently. Vijay Varma, a grey-shaded character with a dual personality violent and lovable has also played the role well.

Review

For entertainment purposes the movie is watchable but if you see the movie story with the lens of right and wrong then the movie favors tit for tat. The character of Alia Bhatt treated her husband in the same way he treated her. Domestic violence with women and with men both are equally wrong. The question of right and wrong arise many times in the film.

Darlings isn’t quite a dark comedy or a twisted suspenseful thriller. Shot in a confined space throughout (a rather spacious chawl room), the film keeps going in circles, making it more of a monotonous drama than a gripping domestic noir. The climax feels morally conflicted and leaves room for thought.
