Mumbai: Maharashtra cabinet minister and senior NCP leader Nawab Malik has been sent to 14-day judicial custody by a special PMLA court in Mumbai in connection with the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim money laundering case. He was earlier remanded in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) till March 7. The ED had arrested Malik on February 23 in a money laundering case related to fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his associates.

Following the arrest, Malik, a 62-year-old minister for minority affairs in the Maharashtra government and spokesperson of the NCP, was sent to 8-day ED custody. However, on Thursday, his custody was extended to March 7. ED officials had said Malik had links with people related to the 1993 Mumbai blasts. The probe, the agency says, is linked to the activities of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, his associates and the Mumbai underworld.

After Malik's arrest, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar had on Saturday said that the action was politically motivated and that his name was being linked with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim because of being a Muslim. Pawar had also rejected the opposition's demand for Malik's resignation. Pawar had said that Malik and his family members were being deliberately harassed, but we would fight against it. '
