The deadline for people who want to link their Aadhaar with their Ration Card has been extended by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. The previous deadline of December 31, 2021 was extended to March 31, 2022, but in a notification dated March 22, 2022, it was extended to June 30, 2022.

The National Food Security Act requires the federal and state governments to work together to achieve the key enhancements to the Targeted Public Distribution System. Accordingly, in order to benefit from the government's changes, Aadhaar must be linked to biometric information of eligible recipients for effective benefit targeting under this Act.

On its website, the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs states: "One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) is a programme that uses Aadhaar Seeding to nationalise a beneficiary's ration card. Her or his ration card must have her or his Aadhaar number. The recipient can pick up her or his entitled foodgrain from any contractual price outlet in the country thanks to Aadhaar seeding. As a result, even if the family moves from one section of the country to another, their right to food security is guaranteed."
