Shri Guru Ramdas Ji was born in the house of Shri Haridas Mal Ji Sodhi and Mata Daya Kaur Ji on Kartik Badi 2nd Samvat 1561 in Chuna Mandi Market in Lahore. His childhood name was Jetha Ji. His mother Daya Kaur Ji passed away in when he was a kid. When he was seven years old, his father Shri Haridas Ji also died. At this stage, he took his grandmother with him to the village of Basara.

He too used to sell ghunganiya (boiled chickpeas) like other Kshatriya children. When Shri Guru Amardas Ji ascended the Gurugadi in Chetra Sudi 4 Samvat 1608, he started taking more care of Jetha Ji. Seeing Jetha Ji's sense of tolerance, humility, and obedience, Guru Amardas Ji married his younger daughter Bhani to Jetha Ji (Shri Guru Ramdas Ji).

Gurugaddi was handed over to Guru Ramdaji by Shri Guru Amardasji in Govindwal District Amritsar on 1 September 1574 AD. In the 16th century, the fourth Sikh Guru Ramdas encamped on the banks of a pond whose water had divine power. For this reason, the city was named Amrit + Sar (Sarovar of Amrit).
