Today is the death anniversary of the country's famous Shehnai player Ustad Bismillah Khan. Born to a Bihari Muslim family in Dumaran, Bihar, on March 21, 1916, Ustad Bismillah Khan has won the heart of the audience. Let us know on his death anniversary today 5 things that you may not know:-

Bismillah Khan's childhood name was Qamaruddin. He was the second son of his parents. Since his elder brother's name was Shamsuddin, his grandfather Rasool Baksh said 'Bismillah' which meant 'good start'.

Bismillah Khan inherited music because his family members were well versed in playing Darwari Raag. His father used to play the Shehnai in the court of Keshav Prasad Singh, the Maharaja of the Dumaran state of Bihar.

For the first time at the age of 14, Bismillah Khan performed the Shehnai playing at the Music Council in Allahabad. Since then, he has emerged as a first-class clarinet player in a short time.

Ustad Bismillah Khan has been conferred with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Tansen Award, and was awarded India's highest honour in the year 2001.

On August 15, 1947, on the eve of the country's independence, Bismillah Khan's Shehnai welcomed Free India with a tricolour hoisting over the Red Fort. For this, he was invited by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first PRIME minister of independent India, to play the shehnai.
