Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has termed the death of Covid-19 patients due to non-supply of oxygen to hospitals as a criminal act and said it is nothing short of a massacre by officials who were entrusted with the responsibility of its continuous supply. The court made the remarks on reports going viral on social media that covid-19 patients have died in Lucknow and Meerut districts due to lack of oxygen.

The court has directed the district magistrates of Lucknow and Meerut to conduct a factual inquiry into them within 48 hours. A bench of Justices Siddharth Verma and Ajit Kumar gave the direction while hearing a PIL on the spread of infection in the state and the status of the quarantine centre. The court has asked the two district magistrates to submit their inquiry report at the next hearing of the case and appear before the court online.

The court said "We are deeply saddened to see that covid patients are dying due to non-supply of oxygen to hospitals. It is a criminal act and is nothing short of genocide by those entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring continuous procurement and supply of liquid medical oxygen".
