Patna: In April 2016, full prohibition has been announced in Bihar. Since then, many incidents of death due to spurious liquor have also come to the fore in the state. In Bihar after prohibition, more than 200 people lost their lives due to spurious liquor in 5 years. But the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data also reports only 23 deaths. In 2016, between August 16 and 18, 19 people died after drinking spurious liquor in Khajurbani in Bihar's Gopalganj district. This was the first major case of death due to spurious liquor after prohibition was implemented in the state. But only six deaths have been reported in the NCRB data. Let us tell you, NCB data is based on the information given by the states and union territories.
This is not the first discrepancy in the death toll due to spurious liquor in Bihar. The NCRB data from 2016 to 2021 also gives only 23 poisoning deaths in Bihar. According to NCRB data, Bihar had six deaths in 2016, none in 2017, none in 2018, nine in 2019, six in 2020, and two in 2021 due to spurious liquor. But the reality is quite the opposite. Meanwhile, at least 20 cases of death due to spurious liquor have been reported in Bihar in which around 200 people have lost their lives. According to media reports, only in 2021, nine cases of spurious liquor were reported and in which 106 people died. In the year 2021, there were three major incidents of spurious liquor in Bihar. In March, 22 people died due to spurious liquor in Bhagalpur. There have been 20 deaths in Gopalganj on 2-3 November and 15 deaths in Gopalganj again on 3-4 November.
More than 70 people died in Saran: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, while replying to the condemnation of prohibition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, has referred to the deaths due to spurious liquor in other states. More than 70 people lost their lives in the Saran incident, after which, in the last three days, 5 people have died due to spurious liquor in Siwan. According to reports, 10 cases of spurious liquor have been reported since January 2022, including two from Saran and three from Nalanda.
