KIEV: A top official said on Saturday that the number of civilians killed in a Russian strike on a train station in Ukraine's Kramatorsk has risen to 52, with 109 people injured.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, the military chief in the Donetsk area, where Kramatorsk is located, verified the death toll in a social media post, but cautioned that "these numbers will certainly climb," according to Ukrayinska Pravda.

On Friday, Russian troops from the controlled lands of the Luhansk region used a Tochka-U system to shell the Kramatorsk railway station, where 4,000 people were awaiting evacuation.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the incident. "Lacking the strength and courage to face up to us on the battlefield, they are cynically destroying the civilian population," he said on Instagram shortly after the strike. "This is an evil with no bounds." And until it is punished, it will continue indefinitely." He also stated that no military were present at the station.

The United States, the European Union (EU), and the United Kingdom have all criticised the incident and have pledged greater military aid to Ukraine. The attack in Kramatorsk, according to EU foreign policy leader Josep Borrell, was another attempt to destroy morale after Russian forces were unable to defeat the Ukrainian army.
