Moscow: Yevgeny Prigozhin, a close aide of Russian President Vladimir Putin, declared on Sunday that a former mercenary seen on video being killed with a hammer after switching sides in the Ukraine conflict was a traitor.

Russian entrepreneur Prigozhin, who founded the Wagner private military company, was responding to an unverified video circulating on Telegram of a man identified as a former Wagner mercenary being executed after admitting that he In September had switched sides to "fight against the Russians".

The 55-year-old man, who identified himself as Yevgeny Nuzin, was seen in the video sticking his head against a brick wall. He claimed to have been abducted in Kyiv on 11 October and woken up in a cellar.

He said, "I hit my head, I fainted, and woke up in this basement. They said I would be put to the test."

A man in combat gear, who was trailing behind Nuzin, hit him on the head and neck with a hammer while he was speaking.
As he lay on the ground, the unknown man again hit Nujin on the head.

One of several, according to Russian media, was linked to the Wagner group. The phrase "Hammer of Revenge" appeared in the title of the video.

When asked about the execution video, Prigozhin said it should be titled "A dog receives a dog's death", in remarks made public by his spokeswoman.

Prigozhin, who was punished by the US and the European Union for his performance in Wagner, said that Nuzin "betrayed his people, betrayed his comrades, and deliberately cheated." Nuzin betrayed his country.

The Wagner Group was founded by Prigozhin in 2014, but he publicly acknowledged it in September. Prigozhin had previously denied the affair and even threatened to sue journalists who reported it.

Wagner's group, initially composed of former members of the Russian military, has fought in countries such as Mali, Libya, the Central African Republic, Syria, and Ukraine.

In a video made public in September, Prigozhin was shown recruiting prisoners of war in a Russian prison, warning them that the fighting would be fierce, and drawing up guidelines for their behaviour.

On Sunday, in additional comments regarding the execution video, Prigozhin also issued a warning to other Russian citizens whom he called traitors.

"Don't forget that not all traitors leave their automatic weapons and join the enemy," he said. Some traitors are imprisoned in offices oblivious to the plight of their own people.
