NEW DELHI: On Thursday, October 24, the Defence Ministry announced the signing of a contract with a private firm to acquire six Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) for the Indian Coast Guard, at a total investment of Rs.387.44 crore. These innovative vessels, often referred to as hovercraft, will be procured under the Buy (Indian) initiative.

The contract with Chowgule & Company Pvt. Ltd., based in Goa, marks the first time these ACVs will be manufactured in India. This development aligns with the government's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision, highlighting a significant advancement in the country’s maritime capabilities.

The project is expected to enhance technical expertise and stimulate growth within the indigenous ancillary sectors, particularly benefiting the MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) segment.

The acquisition aims to strengthen the Indian Coast Guard's operational capabilities, with a renewed focus on maritime security. The ACVs will serve a variety of roles, including high-speed coastal patrols, reconnaissance missions, interception tasks, search and rescue operations, and assistance to distressed ships and crafts.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Defence Ministry has entered into a contract with Chowgule & Company Pvt. Ltd. for the procurement of six Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) at a total cost of ₹387.44 crore for the Indian Coast Guard. These advanced vessels will be manufactured domestically, marking a significant step toward enhancing India's maritime capabilities. Designed to perform a variety of versatile roles, the ACVs will bolster maritime security by facilitating high-speed patrolling, search and rescue operations, and reconnaissance missions. This initiative aligns seamlessly with the government's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision, emphasizing self-reliance and the development of indigenous defense manufacturing.
