Shimla: Atal Rohtang Tunnel built in Uttarakhand is to be inaugurated in September. Before this, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will inspect the Tunnel. The Defense Minister can visit Manali anytime after August 15. The date is not yet fixed. The Ministry of Defense is very serious about the inauguration of the 8.8 km long Atal Rohtang Tunnel. The tunnel will be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. Border Roads Organization has been engaged in its preparations.

The Defense Ministry is showing seriousness regarding the construction of roads and tunnels in the border areas due to the ongoing tension on the Indo-China border. These days the work inside the tunnel is going on at a rapid pace. Last month, the Joint Ministry of Defense and DG BRO have inspected the tunnel. Along with the progress report of the construction work, they also inspected the tunnel from the south portal to the north portal.

Although the defence minister was supposed to reach Manali by the end of July, his visit has been postponed. The 11 thousand feet high Atal Rohtang Tunnel is very important from a strategic point of view. The distance from Tunnel to Manali-Leh will be reduced by about 45 kilometres. Along with this, people of the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti will be connected with the rest of the world. Atal Rohtang Tunnel Chief Engineer Brigadier KP Purushottam said that he is cognizant of the arrival of the Defense Minister, but the exact date has not been set yet.
