New Delhi [India], Jan 30 (NT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to MahatmaGandhi at Rajghat on his 70th death anniversary. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, General Bipin Rawat, Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba & Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa were also present.

From grand old party Congress Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday Congress President Rahul Gandhi, earlier in the day, paid their homage to Mahatma Gandhi here at Gandhi Smriti.

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on this day in 1948. This day is also observed as Martyrs Day by the nation.

President Ram Nath Kovind also paid tribute to MahatmaGandhi at Rajghat on his 70th death anniversary.Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu also paid homage to ‘Bapu’ on his 70th death anniversary.

In Ahmedabad People also paid their respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Sabarmati Ashram to mark Martyrs Day.

Early in the morning, President Kovind and Prime Minister Modi took to their respective official Twitter handles to share their messages about the father of the nation.

President Kovind  tweeted, "On Martyrs' Day, we gratefully remember Mahatma Gandhi and the countless freedom fighters who sacrificed their all for our Independence #PresidentKovind."

Prime Minister Modi also posted "We bow to all those martyrs who have sacrificed themselves in service of our nation. We will always remember their courage as well as dedication towards the nation,".(NT)
