New Delhi: A bill to increase the salary of MLAs, ministers, the speaker, and the leader of the opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly was passed on Monday by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government.

A Delhi MLA currently receives a salary and benefits package of Rs 54,000 per month, which is likely to rise to Rs 90,000. The Aam Aadmi Party government has hiked the salary from Rs 12,000 to Rs 30,000 per month. There will also be a hike in many other allowances, which altogether will raise the salary to Rs 90,000 per month from the existing Rs 54,000.

Manish Sisodia claimed that although the Delhi government had already enacted the bill seven years ago, the Centre had only raised a few concerns.  "In the past seven years, there have been several talks on this subject. Seven years ago, the state government had a few concerns; after taking their proposals into consideration, the Delhi Assembly once more enacted this bill and is now hoping the Centre will do the same."

Ram Niwas Goel, the speaker of the Delhi Assembly, informed in May this year that the salary had raised in 2011. Hence,  the government presented the proposed hike to the Centre in 2015 but it was turned down.
