New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal recently visited the Bhalswa landfill site and provided an update on waste reduction efforts. He announced that approximately 45 lakh tonnes of waste from the landfill are expected to be processed and reduced by May 2024. This reduction in waste will result in the reclamation of 35 acres of land that can be repurposed for various uses.
The Bhalswa landfill site currently holds around 60-65 tonnes of municipal waste across its 72-acre expanse. In addition to the legacy waste accumulated over the years, the site receives 2,000 tonnes of fresh waste daily. Kejriwal revealed that the initial target was to reduce 14 lakh tonnes of waste, but progress has been swift, with 18 lakh tonnes already processed.
The agency responsible for waste processing at the Bhalswa landfill aims to reduce 30 lakh tonnes of waste by May 15, 2024, according to their set deadline. Kejriwal expressed optimism that they might even achieve the removal of around 45 lakh tonnes of waste by that date due to the pace of work.
While Kejriwal inspected the Bhalswa site, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva visited the Ghazipur landfill site and accused the Chief Minister of providing inaccurate information regarding waste reduction efforts. Sachdeva claimed that a new mountain of garbage has formed at Ghazipur in the past eight months, contrary to Kejriwal's assertions of reducing the landfill's size.
To manage the remaining waste, another agency will be hired, but the tendering process has faced delays, awaiting approval from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) standing committee. Kejriwal clarified that the MCD panel for this task would be formed as per the Supreme Court's directives, and the Delhi government is actively seeking alternative solutions.
The Chief Minister also mentioned plans to visit the other two landfill sites in Delhi in the near future. During his visit to Bhalswa, he was accompanied by Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, Leader of the House in MCD Mukesh Goyal, and AAP's MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak.
