New Delhi: A Delhi court has extended the judicial custody of JNU student Sharjeel Imam facing charges of treason. The six-day judicial custody of the Imam ended on Wednesday. He was arrested on January 28 from Kako in Jehanabad district of Bihar. The Imam was arrested for allegedly making provocative speeches against the proposed National Civil Register (NRC) and charges of treason.

He was then sent to police custody for 5 days. The detention was then extended by 3 more days. On 6 February he was sent to judicial custody for six days and was produced before the court after the end of the remand period. The crime branch filed a sedition case against him on 26 January. The case was registered on 13 January for delivering a raucous speech, the video of which went viral on social media.

The voice sample of Sharjeel Imam will be taken. This has been approved by a Delhi court on Wednesday which will be matched by his speech in which he is threatening to cut off the Northeast from India. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Purushottam Pathak issued the order on the appeal of Delhi Police. The judge said that keeping in view the circumstances and facts of the present case and the order of the apex court, the police officer is allowed to take voice samples of the accused.
