The resident welfare and market associations have filed over 2,000 complaints with the Delhi government regarding the parking of outdated automobiles on their property. Within two days of establishing a WhatsApp number for the purpose, these complaints started to come in. RWAs and market organizations were given the number 8376050050 by the Delhi Transport Department to communicate information regarding parked used cars.

The concerns have not yet been confirmed by the transport department. “Within two days of issuing the number, we received 2,000 complaints from across Delhi. However, the complaints need to be verified," a department official told PTI. People are sending pictures of vehicles that they feel look old but now officials will have to verify the details of the vehicle's registration in their database to ascertain whether they are actually over age and unfit for plying on Delhi's roads.

"If we find the vehicles inappropriate to be parked in public places, our teams will be dispatched, and they will impound the vehicles and promptly give them over to the authorized scrapper for scrapping," the national capital is home to almost 25 lakh such automobiles.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2018 that driving diesel and gasoline vehicles that are more than 10 and 15 years old, respectively, are prohibited in Delhi. It also stated that the automobiles that disobeyed the injunction would be seized. In accordance with a National Green Tribunal rule from 2014, vehicles older than 15 years cannot be parked in public areas.

Over two lakh older than ten-year-old diesel automobiles were deregistered earlier this year. The transport authorities issued a warning last week informing citizens not to drive outdated vehicles in the capital because they would be impounded right away. “Now, it has come to notice that in spite of these orders, such vehicles are still found plying and parked on the roads of Delhi," the official said.
