Delhi High Court gives notice to Central government over violation of right to privacy

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday, hearing public interest litigation of an NGO for violation of the right to privacy, has asked the Central Government to respond. The Public Interest Litigation states that the right to privacy will be violated by the Centre's surveillance system (Centralized Monitoring System, Network Traffic Analysis and National Intelligence Grid).

A bench of Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan of the Delhi High Court has asked the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Information and Technology, Law and Justice to place their stand on the PIL of an NGO. The next hearing of this case will be held on 7 January 2021. In this PIL, it has been said that with the help of these surveillance systems, Central and State government agencies can monitor all types of phone conversations, which is a violation of the fundamental right of any citizen.

This public interest litigation has been filed by senior advocate Prashant Bhushan. The NGO is demanding from the High Court to direct the Center to shut down all types of surveillance project centralized monitoring systems, network traffic analysis and national intelligence grid.
