New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday (September 27, 2021) stayed a single judge's decision to implement CM Arvind Kejriwal's promise to pay poor tenants during the Corona period. A bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh said the verdict stays till the matter is heard further. The next hearing in the case will be held on November 29, 2021. Justice Pratibha Singh in the July 22 order had termed the verdict as enforceable in which CM Kejriwal had said that he would pay the rent of tenants who were unable to pay the rent.

During the Corona epidemic on March 29, 2021, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said in a press conference that the Delhi government will pay rent on behalf of poor tenants. If a tenant is unable to pay the rent. However, the decision was not implemented, which has been filed in the High Court. The Delhi government had filed a petition in the high court challenging justice Pratibha Singh's order. Senior advocate Manish Vashishta, appearing for the Delhi government during the hearing, said, "There was no such promise. All we said was to follow the Prime Minister's order. We had asked the landlords not to force the tenants for rent and also said that if the tenants do not get any means, the Government will look into it.''

The court asked, 'So don't you intend to pay? Not even a single per cent?' The court said, 'It is very surprising that the Delhi government, which claims to be the best and highest budgetary in all states, is refusing for such a small amount.' On this, Manish Vashishta said, 'Ask only when there is a demand.' He claimed that no one came to him to seek relief. On the other hand, advocate Gaurav Jain, appearing for the petitioners, opposed the court's decision and said his client had no means of paying rent. It may be mentioned that Justice Singh had ordered the Delhi government during that time to formulate a policy to fulfil the promise made by the Chief Minister. He had said in his order on July 22, 2021, that Arvind Kejriwal's press conference was held, the promise cannot be ignored.
