Hijab controversy in Delhi too! Uproar over letter from education committee chairman

New Delhi: In South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) schools, girl students wearing hijabs have been banned from entering classes. Instructions in this regard have been given on behalf of Nitika Sharma, chairperson of the Corporation Education Committee, writing a letter to the officials of the education department. He asked the officials to ensure that students in corporation schools come only wearing uniforms. However, several experts have termed the controversy over councillor Nitika Sharma's letter from Dwarka South to the civic body's education department as an unnecessary issue, saying that the councillor's letter has no official significance and such rules can only be issued by the education department.

In her letter, Nitika Sharma, chairperson of the education committee of the SDMC, has asked the director of education to instruct all zonal officers not to allow students to wear 'religious attire' in primary schools of the civic body. The development comes to light when a Class VI student was allegedly stopped from wearing the hijab at a government school in Mustafabad in northeast Delhi earlier this week. On the issue, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia told the press on Thursday that the state government's education department has not issued any such order.

Several senior education officials of the SDMC, on the condition of anonymity, said on Friday that the department has not issued any formal order in the matter and there is no compulsion in Nitika Sharma's letter.
