New Delhi: Delhi-NCR woke up to heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heat, but also causing significant waterlogging and widespread traffic chaos. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that this wet spell will continue throughout the week, with moderate showers expected on Wednesday and Thursday.

Relief from Heat and Humidity as Rains Cool Delhi

Prior to the downpour, Delhi experienced sweltering conditions, with temperatures soaring to 35.6 degrees Celsius and humidity levels ranging from 67% to 87%. The rain provided a welcome break, significantly cooling down the temperature and improving the city’s air quality, much to the relief of its residents.

IMD Issues Rainfall Alerts for Delhi-NCR

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Delhi and parts of southwest NCR, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall, particularly in Central and East Delhi. The department has predicted light rainfall to persist through Saturday, interspersed with moderate spells. However, parts of northwest India, including Delhi, may see reduced rainfall due to an anti-cyclonic system forming over Rajasthan.

Heavy Rain Leads to Waterlogging and Traffic Woes

The downpour caused severe waterlogging in several areas of Delhi, creating major traffic disruptions across the city. Among the worst-hit areas was Minto Road, where an autorickshaw was left partially submerged. Similar scenes were reported near the Ashram Bridge, where heavy water accumulation led to traffic snarls, frustrating commuters and bringing movement to a crawl.

Traffic Police Issue Advisories and Diversions Amid Deluge

In response to the waterlogged roads, Delhi traffic police released multiple advisories and set up diversions to manage the congestion. Key routes such as Rohtak Road, Connaught Place's outer circle, Minto Road, and ITO Chowk were particularly affected. Commuters were advised to avoid these areas, with alternate routes suggested, including Outer Ring Road, District Centre Janakpuri, and Najafgarh.

Weather Alerts in Place: Orange and Yellow for Various Regions

While the orange alert remains active for parts of Delhi, the IMD has also issued a yellow alert for other regions in the NCR, covering Northwest, Northeast, and Southeast districts. Rainfall measurements were significant, with Pitampura recording 57.0 mm of rain and Delhi University receiving 55.5 mm.

As the week progresses, authorities and residents alike are bracing for more rain while hoping for minimal disruptions. The rains have provided a much-needed break from the heat, but the accompanying waterlogging and traffic issues are proving to be a persistent challenge.
