New Delhi: Crime in the country has increased considerably in the recent past, while a 31-year-old junior engineer has been taken into custody for stealing a woman's gold earrings in Delhi's Mansarovar Park area. Police said on Tuesday that the offender snatched to meet the expenses of his birthday event.

Police said the culprit Mohit Gautam alias Luv hails from Jyoti Nagar in Shahdara. A case was registered at Mansarovar Park police station on Friday for snatching the gold earrings of the woman by a biker. Due to the investigation, the police examined more than 30 CCTV footage and tracked the escape route of the snatcher, there was no number plate on the bike at the time of the robbery, so the police had to work hard to trace the culprit.

The officer said that keeping an eye on Jagatpuri liquor shop on Sunday, the police stopped the motorcycle with different features with vacant number plates and arrested Gautam. In interrogation, Gautam revealed that he is a junior engineer on a contract basis at BSES. In police interrogation, Mohit said that he stole the woman's gold earrings to celebrate his birthday on Sunday as he did not have money. Gautam said he had sold the earrings to Surendra, a goldsmith who is a resident of Ashok Nagar in Shahdara, Surendra fled when the police reached Goldsmith's house.
