New Delhi: In its third attempt to conduct the Mayoral polls after a commotion between members of the House, the presiding officer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Satya Sharma has adjourned the House without electing Mayor.

The house was adjourned for the third time in a row after a fuss was created about nominated members being permitted to vote in the elections for the positions of mayor, deputy mayor, and chairs of different standing committees.
he house met twice earlier following the Aam Aadmi Party's victory in the civic elections held on December 4 of last year, but was unable to designate the mayor as a result of fights between BJP and AAP members.

Today's house procedures got underway at the Delhi Civic Centre when Presiding Officer Satya Sharma arrived and declared that members who were nominated by aldermen would be able to cast ballots for the mayor. AAP members opposed to this, and the house adjourned.

After the house proceeding resumed, BJP members began sloganeering accusing the AAP of attempting to poach its councilors.

In a letter sent to the MCD's presiding officer on Sunday, council members from the Aam Aadmi Party demanded that aldermen be disqualified from voting in today's election for mayor, deputy mayor, and the Standing Committee.

The letter read: "We are the MCD council members who were elected under the Aam Aadmi Party's emblem. The Competent Authority has directed that the election of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and members of the Standing Committee take place on February 6, 2023."

"This is to reiterate that as per Article 243 R of the Constitution of India and as given in the Proviso to Section 3(b)(i) of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, the nominated members (Alderman) are not entitled to vote in the above-mentioned elections," the councillors stated in their letter to the presiding officer.

The Aam Aadmi Party gained up to 134 seats out of a total of 250 in the Delhi municipal elections, which were held on December 4 and the results of which were made public on December 7.

The first 2 sessions of the Municipal Corporation poll, the house held on January 6 and January 24, respectively, were also adjourned.
