Delhi riot case: Court sends Sharjeel Imam to judicial custody till October 1

New Delhi: Sharjeel Imam has been remanded to judicial custody till October 1 in the UAPA case in a Delhi riot and sedition case. On August 25, delhi police had formally detained former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam under UAPA in connection with the violence in Delhi's North East district.

The Delhi Police has also indicted Sharjeel Imam for plotting riots during anti-CAA protests. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat has jailed the imam for 30 days in view of the nature of the investigation into the case. A petition was filed in the court on behalf of the Special Cell of Delhi Police to remand Sharjeel Imam to judicial custody for 30 days now.

In February this year, violence erupted in Delhi, killing more than 50 people and causing a lot of property damage. Earlier, the Delhi police had claimed proof against Sharjeel Imam in connection with the provocative speech. A video of Sharjeel Imam was very viral, in which he was looking to cut Assam from India. Surprisingly, no one in the meantime expected Sharjeel.
