New Delhi: The Saket court has rejected the bail plea of Sharjeel Imam, a student of Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). During the hearing on Friday, the Saket Court granted bail to JNU student Sharjeel Imam for making inflammatory speeches during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and asking for the separation of Assam from India. The petition is dismissed.

Earlier, Delhi Police had told the court that JNU student Sharjeel Imam, arrested in a sedition case under UAPA, had tried to create a sense of despair among Muslims through his provocative speeches. On the other hand, Sharjeel Imam, while filing a bail application, in this case, had said in the last hearing that there is no evidence that his speech caused violence nor did he incite anyone to violence. In the bail plea, Sharjeel had claimed that he was never involved in any violence during any protest or demonstration. He is a peace loving citizen.

During the hearing, Sharjeel's lawyer Tanveer Ahmed Mir read out excerpts from his speeches in the court and said that he does not come under the sedition law. He said that no case of violence is made out in these speeches. How does this amount to treason? He said that obstructing the roads is like treason? Pointing to his speeches, the lawyer had said that "How is the matter of cutting off some cities from India treason, when the call Rail Roko is not sedition then how is it sedition?" In the speech, Muslims were asked to cut Assam and make a separate country, in such a situation, if Sharjeel's lawyers do not consider the fact of splitting the country as treason, then only the court can explain to them the definition of sedition.
