NEW DELHI: All documents pertaining to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicles Rules that expired between February 2020 and November 2021 have been extended by the Delhi government until December 31, 2021.

"Adequate precautionary steps are required to avoid a recurrence of the Covid Pandemic-like situation, and for that reason, the validity of all documents issued by the Transport Department, which expired between February 1, 2020 and November 30, 2021, is further extended for one month, i.e., until December 31, 2021," the notice reads.  "However, this extension shall not apply to DTC and Cluster buses." This decision was intended to reduce crowding, which could lead to Covid-19 cases, and to relieve some of the strain on the transportation department, which was hit hard by the first and second waves of the epidemic.

The decision was made after "information was received from various field offices, including fitness unit VIU Burari and Jhulijhuli that a large number of applicants are turning up for various services as the validity of various documents is about to expire on November 30," according to the Delhi government notice. "Heavy crowding has been observed at several driving licence centres and the Fitness Center," the statement continued, "which is a worry for the health and safety of applicants as well as the staff providing public services."
