Friday; June 24, 2016: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) today as an observer. But not as a full member, it has been understand that to become a full member officially.

It is also said, “India will have to sign up at least 30 documents before it can be granted official membership, apart from the main memorandum of obligations”.

According to the Sujata Mehta, secretary (West) said,“ that India was attending the summit as an acceding member, but the speaking slot has been put in the category of observers. "In this summit, the process of India's accession to the SCO will start with a signature on the base document, called the memorandum of obligations … There a schedule is laid down for us to sign up the other documents that India needs to accede to. That will happen as the year goes by," said Sujata Mehta, secretary (West).

"We have to commit to align our processes with what has been agreed by other member countries. We need to work out what we need to do… As far as India's pace of accession at the SCO being a function of Russia, China and the four countries of Central Asia, I would say we see ourselves as following fairly flexible multilateralism. So, we are quite happy to engage in multiple processes. We have been working with other members of SCO on several other fields," Mehta said.

PM Modi(before to his departure from New Delhi) said, “India looks forward to a fruitful outcome from its engagement at the SCO summit. He said India's entry into SCO as a full member will provide it an opportunity to have extended cooperation with member countries in areas of defence, security and counter-terrorism”.
