Delhi's Karol Bagh Hotel Arpit Palace owner arrested

New Delhi: On Sunday, The Delhi Police Crime Branch department arrested the owner of Hotel Arpit Palace following the deaths of 17 people in a massive fire that broke out in Delhi's Karol Bagh area on February 12. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajesh Deo said, Rakesh Goel was arrested from the Indira Gandhi International Airport after the police received a tip-off of his arrival from Qatar by IndiGo flight 6E 1702, media reports said. Goel will be produced in a local court later today.

Delhi government on Saturday cancelled the No Objection Certificate (NOC) given to 30 hotels in the surrounding area following the fire tragedy. The government has also instructed the fire safety department to inspect all hotels in Delhi to check if the safety norms are being followed. Authorities have claimed that there were serious violations of norms in the hotels whose licenses have been cancelled and they would be sealed.

However, the NOC was granted to 45 hotels in Karol Bagh and nearby areas out of which 30 have been cancelled. Delhi Cabinet Minister Satyendra Jain has also issued a notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi regarding this matter. The fire claimed the lives of 17 people including a child and injured as many as 11. Call for help was made to the fire department only 45 minutes after the building caught fire. Around 35 people were rescued from the hotel during the fire.
