Panruthi MLA, Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Party (TVK) chief T Velmurugan said most north Indians do not vote for Tamil Nadu political parties, they only vote for national parties like the BJP. Citing an example to support his argument, Velmurugan talked about North Indians campaigning in Coimbatore constituency for Prime Minister Modi during the assembly elections in 2021.

An Inner Line Permit is a travel document issued by the government that allows an Indian citizen to visit a protected area for a limited time period. If an inner line permit system is in place, it is mandatory for Indian citizens who are not from that state to obtain a permit to enter the state. Across India, the Inner Line Permit system is currently in force in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur. Demand for Inner Line Permit for job security is not new in Tamil Nadu. In the past also, Velmurugan and his party have opposed North Indians taking over government posts in Tamil Nadu.

Though the DMK did not respond to the letter, several arguments were made on social media against the MLA's demand. “What if other states do the same? The free movement of people within the Union of India cannot be restricted. Market economics will determine the demand and supply of human resources as it does for other inputs,” wrote Karti P Chidambaram, Sivaganga Congress MP and son of former finance minister P Chidambaram.
