In the present situation, demand has been raised to make Rahul Gandhi, the former president of Congress, again the party's president. According to the media report, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has demanded that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should again take over as party chief. Gehlot raised this demand in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held yesterday. According to sources, Youth Congress President Srinivas Biwi also supported Gehlot's demand and said that All India Congress Committee (AICC) should call a virtual session and Rahul should be made the party head.
Congress has denied that there was any discussion on the demand of Rahul Gandhi to be re-elected as the party president in the working committee meeting on Tuesday. According to the news agency IANS, the party's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, "This is the sentiment of every Congress worker, but today the discussion was on issues like Indo-China tension, fuel prices rise and Coronavirus epidemic." Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal also said that there was no such discussion about making the president.
Rahul Gandhi, who assumed the post of Congress President in the year 2017, resigned from the post after an embarrassing defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Congress performed so poorly in this election that the party could win only 52 seats. Rahul himself lost the election to Amethi. After his resignation, UPA president Sonia Gandhi was elected as the interim president of the Congress. At the time of leaving the post, Rahul had told senior leaders not to work together with him. Currently, Rahul has criticized the central government a lot on the issue of India-China tension and has raised many questions about it from the government.
